A strategic sustainable mobility project co-financed by the Cross-border cooperation programme Slovenia-Italy 2007-2013 finished in March 2015. In the last four years partners have built or renovated cycling infrastructure in the Slovene regions of Gorenjska and Primorska and Friuli Venezia Giulia, Veneto, Emilia-Romagna on the Italian side. The investments amount to 1.7 million euros. Missing bike paths sections have been built, bike sharing stations, bike rest stops, information panels have been installed.

A new tourism product has been developed – a cross-border bike route named Adriabike divided in two routes. A 1.100 km slow travel itinerary connects Kranjska Gora with Ravenna passing by the lake of Bled, the Soča Valley, the area of Goriška, Carst, Slovenian Istria, Trieste and Venice. The second, more demanding route crossing only the Slovene territory begins in Kranjska Gora, climbs up to the Vršič Pass, descends to the Soča Valley and continues towards Cerkno, Idrija, the Vipava valley to meet the slow route on Carst. Both itineraries are described in brochures, road book and bike maps in four languages which are going to be available in tourist offices and on the project web site. GPS tracks and APP for smartphones can also be downloaded.

Stimulation of intermodal services which would offer cyclists the possibility of transport by train, bus or ship was also one of the project aims. The Friuli Venezia Giulia Region and the Province of Trieste performed experimental pilot projects in 2014 offering free bike transport by bus between Trieste, Grado, Udine and between Trieste and its hinterland. As a result a ferry-boat connecting Trieste with Grado in 2015 increased the number of bikes which can be transported on board. Bus services for cyclists in Trieste have also been improved.

The Adriabike route connecting five regions, the Slovene-Italian cross-border Bike Alpe Adria route in the north Primorska region and the Alpe Adria route connecting Salzburg with Grado, co-financed by the Cross-border programme INTERREG IV Austria-Italy 2007-2013, have the aim to attract bike tourists to the Alps-Adriatic region. The three routes represent an alternative to the cycling route along the river Drava, one of the most popular European cycling destinations. Slovene-Italian cross-border area starts to promote itself as an interesting cycling destination.

Adriabike follows also EuroVelo n. 8 cycle route (Mediterranean Route) and the Italian cycling network BicItalia 6.
