Blue Cities in Action (Starting up the Blue Economy)

URBACT is a European exchange and learning programme promoting and supporting sustainable and integrated urban development. It is one of the instruments of the European Cohesion Policy and it is jointly financed by the European Union (European Regional Development Fund) and the Member States. Programme enables cities to develop pragmatic solutions, to major urban challenges, that are new and sustainable, and that integrate economic, social and environmental dimensions. URBACT enables cities to work together and to share good practices and lessons learned with all professionals involved in urban policy throughout Europe. BluAct Network is part of URBACT programme.

Duration of the project: 1. 6. 2021 – 31. 12. 2022

Lead partner: Piraeus (Greece)

Project Partners of the Network:

  • Liepāja (Liepaja; Latvia)
  • Gdańska Fundacja Przedsiębiorczości (Gdansk; Poland)
  • Boulogne sur mer Développement Côte d’Opale (Boulogne sur mer; France)
  • Regionalni razvojni center Koper (Koper; Slovenia)

Project objective:

BluAct is a Transfer network of port cities aiming to share good practices in Blue Economy entrepreneurship. The project is founded and funded under the EU’s URBACT programme. BluAct follows the success of BlueGrowth Initiative, an awarded entrepreneurship competition that offers incubation services to local businesses boosting innovation and job creation. In 2020 BlueGrowth Initiative was renamed to Blue Growth Piraeus.

Through an approach of creating URBACT Local Support Groups and engaging local stakeholders and other interested parties, the ultimate aim of the BluAct network is to ”start up the blue economy” in coastal Europe cities and discover their valuable connection to the sea.

Activities will follow the URBACT transfer stages:

–          UNDERSTAND the Good Practice

–          ADAPT/REUSE the Good Practice

–          FINALE Sharing of experience and results

Network activities are composed of several dimensions. These are structured within four Work Packages:

  1.  Network management
  2. Transnational Exchange and Learning Activities
  3. The Local dimension
  4. Communication and Dissemination
