Project »MAPSHARING« is directed towards protection, conservation, and the development of environment and space, or, in other words, promotion of sustainable development of the cross-border area.

Regional Development Centre Koper and the region of Trieste have declared the project “MAPSHARING” together (MAPSHARING is an acronym for the title “Determination of joint instruments and methodologies for the purpose of setting up a joint map of spatial knowledge and implementing strategic environmental assessment in the cross-border area of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Autonomous Region and the Republic of Slovenia). Other partners involved in the project are: Municipality of Koper, Province of Pordenone, Province of Udine, and Province of Muggia. The project encompasses the area of 2.541,69 km2 on the Italian side and 1.045 km2 on the Slovene side.

The goals of the project are aimed at sustainable development of the cross-border area, or more precisely at protection, conservation, and the development of environment and space. Project activities are focused on the making of instruments for environment and space management, which take the 2001/42/EU Directive as a base on the grounds of which the State Members had to establish systems of comprehensive assessment of environmental impact, in order to improve the quality of sustainable development. The anticipated results of project activities are construction of joint maps prototype in the field of spatial planning and sustainable development, making of a joint experimental methodology for strategic assessment of environmental impact, elaboration of joint knowledge bases, design of joint infrastructure and the enhancement of sustained co-operation of experts on both sides of the border.

The eligible areas for implementing the Interreg IIIA Slovenia-Italy programme for the Slovene part are: statistical regions Obalno-kraška and Goriška and the municipality of Kranjska Gora, and for the Italian side: Provinces of Udine, Gorizia and Trieste, Province of Pordenone in the Region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Province of Venice, and Province of Rovigo, in the Region of Veneto.
