Renaming the statistical region

The Slovenian government has approved the renaming of the Coastal-Karst region to the Istrian-Karst region.

In the session of the Government of the Republic of Slovenia on March 27, 2025, the proposal to rename the Coastal-Karst statistical region to the Istrian-Karst statistical region was approved. The parliamentary initiative, presented on February 21, 2025, received broad support. The proposal was backed by the mayors of the four Istrian municipalities (Piran, Izola, Koper, and Ankaran) and the Council of the Coastal-Karst region, as well as by the mayors of the Karst municipalities (Sežana, Divača, Komen, and Hrpelje-Kozina).

The Slovenian government supported the change based on historical, geographical, and cultural reasons. The renaming process will be formalized through coordination and the submission of the proposal to the European Commission by March 31, 2025.
